Sony announced today at IFA 2009 it is to bring out a 3D series of its Bravia TVs in 2010, marking the first time the company has brought 3D technology to its TV range.

While the company was remaining tight-lipped about specifics and about just how the 3D tech would work on a Bravia LCD TV, it did show off some demos of the technology.

While 3D may not be the future for home entertainment, as of yet, Sony’s announcement today does herald something of a tipping point for the technology. Now all the company has to do is persuade the Blu-ray Disc Association to pick a 3D BD format that’s friendly to Sony’s TV technology and we could see 3D finally take off in the living room.

Obviously, if you don’t fancy yourself as a Handy Andy, it’s worth getting someone in, as you don’t want to watch as a grand’s worth of screen crashes to the ground.

Once installed, the stand is able to swivel left and right as well as tilting up and down, so that wherever you sit in the room you can ensure it is facing you. When you’re ?nished, simply press the ‘home’ button on the remote to return it ?ush to wall.

Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) LLC recently announced the finalized WHDI 1.0 specifications. This will set a new guideline for companies to develop future wireless HD products ranging from consumer electronics to computers and mobile handhelds. On paper, WHDI 1.0 will support an uncompressed 1080p signal within an effective range of 30m through walls. This is on top of Deep Color and HDCP copy protection compatibility, as well as adequate bandwidth for resource intensive 60Hz video playback used by game consoles, etc.

According to its spokesperson, the first WHDI 1.0-based products are tentatively due in Q3 2010, encompassing primarily dongles, TVs and PCs. Other comparable solutions include the Wireless HDMI and WirelessHD. We should be hearing news from all the competing camps during the upcoming CES 2010 tradeshow soon. If these technologies take off, the days of sorting out unsightly cable spaghetti may finally come to an end.

HDTVs with Integrated Digital TV (IDTV) function are capable of receiving regular and digital TV programs out-of-the-box. But to receive the latter, you’ll need a separate aerial feed that is piped through an external terrestrial/satellite antenna or supplied by your local cable provider. This means two separate cables are needed, one for analog TV broadcasts and another for digital, to connect to the panel.

However, most IDTV entries are shipped with only a single TV aerial input that can accept only one signal. Unless your local TV channels are available in simulcast format, you’ll end up having to manually switch cables to enjoy both analog and digital programs. In Singapore, for example, there’re still some stations such as Channel U and Suria available only in analog broadcast.

Here’s a simple and affordable solution. What you’ll need is a two-way RF splitter which costs S$10 to S$30 in most hardware stores. Connect the analog and digital aerials to the outputs of the splitter, while its corresponding input goes to the TV via an additional coaxial cable. You may need an F-type adapter to mate with the RF splitter’s threaded socket if your antenna output comes with a RCA-style plug (refer to image).

Besides Panasonic, LG is the only other major electronics brand which currently offers borderless HDTVs. The 47SL80YD is a cut above the lesser displays with a flush bezel front molded out of a single sheet of glass. This conventional LCD panel is also one of the slimmest in its class with a 45.5mm-thin panel depth. Beyond these aesthetics touches, the 47-incher has a Super-In Plane Switching (S-IPS) screen renowned for color consistency over extended viewing angles. This is in addition to the high 150,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 200Hz scanning backlight for smoother motion.
